Hacienda El Rodeo, is a project initiated in 2011 by Alfonso Reyes, Martha Camacho and their son Cristian Reyes. Starting from scratch on an abandoned farm, they have dedicated themselves to cultivating Arabica Coffee annually. Currently, they have cultivated 145 hectares. The total area of the farm is 170 hectares, with 25 hectares reserved for nature and wildlife conservation. The farm, located at an elevation ranging from 1,900 to 2,200 meters above mean sea level (m.a.s.l.), adopts a shade-grown approach, predominantly utilizing native trees from the region and plantain as a transitional shade. The annual harvest takes place from November to February, with a strong focus on producing specialty coffee (84+). They offer various processing methods, including washed, natural, anoxic, inoculated or tailored to meet customer preferences. Castillo variety covers 85% of the cultivated area, while the remaining 15% features exotic varieties such as Pink Bourbon, Gesha, and Sidra. Right from the beginning, the project prioritized coffee quality and direct trade. In 2023, Hacienda El Rodeo achieved a remarkable accomplishment by obtaining the top position at the national coffee competition, “Colombia: Land of Diversity,” organised by the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC), also at the regional competition “Best Cup of Santander 2023”. The Reyes family has been involved in the agricultural business for several generations. Alfonso Reyes, in particular, has been involved in farming and managing various crops such as corn, beans, tomatoes, cotton, and more since he became independent at the age of 15. Twenty-five years ago, he made the decision to focus solely on producing Panela, an unrefined cane sugar product. However, recognizing the emerging opportunities in the agro-industrial sector, he eventually decided to diversify his business. In 2011, Alfonso joined forces with his son, Cristian, to venture into the coffee industry. Cristian, with his background as a barista and academic qualifications in International Trade and Master in Coffee Economics & Science (earned from IllY in Italy) takes charge of processing the harvest, quality control, and sales responsibilities (based in Berlin, Germany), while Alfonso serves as the agronomic leader and head manager. Nowadays, the entire family is actively engaged in the business with a common goal of driving its growth.
